Lake Geneva Winterfest 2019
January 26th - February 3rd, 2019
The 2017 U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition
Winterfest is Home to the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition
Every winter, Lake Geneva’s Winterfest celebration proudly hosts the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition – a competition that features some of the most talented and creative sculptors in the world!
This year, the sculpting competition will feature fifteen talented teams of three, with members from all over the country. There will be teams with local members (last year’s champions were from Milwaukee, WI, less than an hour from Lake Geneva) and there will be teams with members from as far as Alaska.
For the past twenty-one years, the national competition has been the cornerstone of our winter celebration, attracting attention from parents, children, local organizations, and media outlets across our state.
Here’s How it Works
One of the most interesting parts of this national competition is how the winners are decided – the teams themselves vote!
Gold, silver, and bronze winners are determined by votes from the artists themselves (teams cannot vote for their own work). The judging criteria breaks out like this:
- Creativity – Originality of Expression (50%)
- Technique – Utilization of Materials, Excellence in Execution and Presentation (30%)
- Message – Visual force of message by jury (20%)
This competition recognize gold, silver, and bronze winners, and also offers two additional categories, which invite previous winners to pick their favorite, and for Winterfest attendees to name a “People’s Champion” – the most popular sculpture with the public.
