FELLOW MORTALS WILDLIFE HOSPITAL

Lake Geneva, WI
Website | Phone: (262) 248-5055

               Mission

Fellow Mortals is a wildlife hospital. We support our community by providing professional care for 2000 injured, orphaned, or sick wild birds and mammals found and rescued by the public every year. We admit patients 365 days a year by emergency appointment. Fellow Mortals is a living philosophy, and our staff and interns work every day to put that philosophy into practice through rehabilitation, education and research.  Our goal is to inspire other rehabilitators and facilities who see the possibilities in our approach.

               Community Resources

In addition to providing direct animal care services, Fellow Mortals provides wildlife information and education in formal programs and in hundreds of phone conversations every year—again, at no charge to the public. Our goal is to encourage compassion in humans toward other species in order that humans and wildlife can peacefully coexist. While we work with more than 100 species of wild animals, the most charismatic are the Bald eagle and Common loon, both of which came to us from the Lake Geneva area this past year and were released back to the wild. We currently have two Bald eagles in care from the lakes area, a mature male rescued by the local police department after being hit by a car, and an immature female rescued by our staff, exhibiting symptoms of highly pathogenic avian influenza. The rescue, rehabilitation, and release of this birds is a source of pride and hope for the community.

Fellow Mortals is licensed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. We are committed to professional, ethical, and compassionate care and, in 2024, Fellow Mortals was voted Charity Navigator’s Best Medium-sized Nonprofit nationwide.

               Most Urgent Need

While we receive no government funding, donations make it possible for us to help where we are needed. There is no charge for our services, making it possible for anyone to act on their compassion and make a difference if they find a wild creature in distress, or orphaned. We are just starting our 'busy season,' where we will admit approximately 1500 orphaned birds and mammals over the next 4-5 months. Fewer than 50% of those who bring us animals are able to donate, so we rely heavily on donations from charitable individuals, businesses and foundations to make it possible for us to help wherever we are needed, regardless of the animal finder's ability to donate.
