BLOCK #9 | PENNSYLVANIA

TEAM NAME:
Jack of All Lanterns
SCULPTURE TITLE:
AI and the Artist
ARTIST STATEMENT:
We set out to create a piece that embodies the tension between human creativity and artificial intelligence. While many established artists harness AI as a collaborative tool to refine and expand their work, the story is different for those just starting out. Aspiring artists often feel discouraged by the speed and ease with which AI can generate polished images, leaving them disheartened or even driven to abandon their artistic careers altogether. Our piece symbolizes this struggle: an artist’s hand reaching forward, yet restrained by a robotic grip. The robot represents AI—not as a partner, but as a force holding back the artist’s potential, capturing the emotional weight of opportunity lost and creativity constrained.
Team Members:
-
Josh Woodard (Captain): John Woodard began carving when a snowstorm in 2009 inspired him to create something different than your average snowman for his son who was just a toddler. Since then, he has refined his craft and built bigger more elaborate snow carvings whenever Mother Nature provides enough snow to accommodate – which is not often enough to satisfy the desire to carve that was ignited. Since 2013 John has expanded his mediums to pumpkins and sand, each challenging and satisfying in their own regard. John now participates in competitions and various events for each of the mediums he works with. John considers the Lake Geneva Snow sculpting event as one of his favorites of all his mediums.
-
Jeff Brown: Jeff is an award winning multimedia artist, 3d animator, and illustrator. His specialty, Pumpkins, has seen him participate in Food Networks Halloween Wars in 2019. In 2020, Jeff learned Snow Sculpting from John Woodard and has been participating in various events. Jeff, when not creating incredible works of art with Snow or Pumpkins creates giant fur covered monster sculptures as well as large dinosaurs.
-
Patrick Cabry: Patrick is an award winning Sculptor of Pumpkins for more than ten years. When Patrick is not leveraging his artistic skills in his interior design business, or sculpting Pumpkins, he can be found in his art studio where there is always some new project on the horizon.
