A Path Shaped by Generations

Long before vacation homes lined Geneva Lake, Indigenous peoples, including the Potawatomi, traveled these shores for fishing, gathering, farming, and trade. The Potawatomi were part of the Council of Three Fires, an alliance that also included the Ojibwe and Odawa nations, and they established villages around the western end of Geneva Lake, near what are now Fontana and Williams Bay. They called the lake Kishwauketoe, meaning “clear water,” and the shoreline trails served as important connections between their communities.

That history changed dramatically in the 19th century as treaties, land cessions, and forced removal pushed Potawatomi communities westward. By 1836, the Potawatomi presence around Geneva Lake had been deeply disrupted. The trails themselves, however, continued to connect people to the water.

As settlers established communities around the lake, the route along the shore eventually became a workmen’s path used by people traveling to and from the grand summer estates that began appearing later in the century.

The lake’s transformation into a fashionable summer retreat accelerated after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, when affluent Chicago families began seeking a nearby escape from the city. Families like the Seipps, Wrigleys, Maytags, and Schwinns built impressive summer homes along the shoreline, joining earlier settlers and other prominent families who helped shape the lake’s distinctive character.

Some of these estates remain landmarks along the Shore Path today, creating a remarkable connection between the people who lived here generations ago and the visitors who walk the shoreline now.
